LRF funded and organized the surgical mission from June 11-19th, 2013. Winchester Hospital (Boston) and Queen of the Valley Hospital (Napa) donated medical supplies. Ethicon donated medical sutures. America-Cares donated the anesthetics. A glidescope videolaryngoscope by Verathon Medical was on loan for use on this mission. A team of 25 health care professionals provided mobile health care services in 2 district hospitals of Oudomxay province (Houn and Pakbeng districts) during 8 days, providing 5 main services: ENT, dental, eye, expectant mother and pediatric services. The primary focus of this mission was to collaborate with the Lao physicians and surgeons to provide experience with complex operations so that they can continue the work after the team has left. Over seven days we operated on 30 patients. We trained Lao surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses. All operations were successful and there were no complications. A Lao team from Oudomxay provincial hospital worked together with Thai experts to treat patients with eyelid diseases, lacrimal duct obstruction, and eyelid cysts. Services were free of charge for all patients. Examination and surgery was performed by Thai specialists and a Lao ophthalmologist of the eye unit.
