We met Mong while visiting our school project in Simmano in January 2007. Mong was born with an intestinal malformation which was summarily corrected at birth. The problem became much more serious at age seven when we met him. With the relentless efforts of our local coordinator Ms. Sasithone Sengchang, the Lao Rehabilitation Foundation provided all necessary support to send him to Mahosoth Hospital where he underwent surgery by a team of Vietnamese surgeons. While visiting our projects in early January 2007, we were alerted by Dr. Leila Srour about the tragic accident of Pheng. The 20 year old boy had been struck by lightning while working in a rice field in his village near Luang Nam Tha. Pheng, who survived the ordeal, was burned over 70% of his body and left suffering several months with minimal care. The construction of a new building at the Hatsayfong District Hospital was initiated by the Buddhist monks of Hatsayfong village in 2008 to provide twelve additional rooms with toilets to the patients of the region who otherwise would not have shelter when under treatment. Without accurate records, we estimated Vang to be about five years old when we found her at Home of Light in early 2004. Like many other children there, she was born with congenital cataract. By luck, we met Joey in 2005 when visiting a remote village some 30 miles North of Vientiane. Joey who was born with cleft feet deformity was then three years old. Having no resources, his parents had accepted his fate. After much discussion, our coordinator Sommanouane convinced them that perhaps a medical intervention could improve Joey’s mobility. Established in 1995 by the Ministry of Health in cooperation with the Dark & Light Blind Care Foundation in Holland, the Home of Light is only partially funded by the Lao PDR government and minimally funded by the Dark & Light Foundation. It houses year-round approximately 50 blind students with ages ranging from 4 to 16 years old. Simmano flooding Floods in several provinces inundated about 75,000 hectares of agricultural land in August 2008, of which 43,661 hectares of crops were damaged. The worse floods since 1966 have inflicted damage worth hundreds of billions of kip, destroying farmlands, irrigation systems, roads, schools and houses, according to official reports. Entirely funded by the Lao Rehabilitation Foundation, a new library building was erected at Simmano High School and opened its doors to students in September 2006. With the support of Standard Chartered Bank IT division in Bangkok, Thailand, 10 computers have been installed in the new building, allowing the school to provide computer training and computer assisted foreign language courses. In 2003, the Lao Rehabilitation Foundation replaced the old roof and provided electric power to the Simmano High School. In addition, 32 fans were installed in 16 classrooms.
